We had a smooth flight from New York to Miami, mostly everyone slept considering we’d all been up since before 3am. We had a little bit of a delay on the runway of Miami due to some rain. But we finally arrived in Nicaragua at about 1:30 Nica time and 3:30 NYC time. Our coordinators Melida, and Denis received us with open arms and we headed to a local cantina for lunch. Roasted chicken, rice, chips, and a salad was our first meal. The dragonfruit juice was the best part.
During the two hour bus ride to Esteli, (in the northern mountains of Nicaragua) the students had a karaoke dance party. (It is amazing how much fun teenagers can have interacting with each other when they don’t have cell phones to distract them.) It was probably the most fun any of us has ever had on a bus! We were amazed at how much energy the students have after a night of little sleep. Evening meetings and orientations have occupied most of our evening post dinner once arriving to Hotel y restarante el Chico in Esteli. We are a bit exhausted but very excited about our first full day. Tomorrow we learn about the history of Nicaragua!
I’m so glad you all arrived safely!!! Have a blast guys!!!

Teenagers without cell phones?! I didn’t think it could be done! What a rare and precious opportunity. Thanks so much for spear-heading this, Sarah! I cannot wait to hear more about your adventures when you return 🙂
