Bonjour dear family and friends!!!
Greetings from Uriel and Cindy! Today was our first official Community Action Project (CAP) Delivery day. The highlights of the day included finalizing our project plan, cleaning up the project site at La Culata, and going shopping for all the necessary materials.
To start the day off, we all woke up bright and early at 7AM and settled down for a breakfast of mangú (an iconic Dominican food composed of mashed plantains, onions, and spices, sausage, eggs, and papaya juice. Due to unforeseen circumstances, our CAP project decision had to be redirected, and subsequently, our schedule shifted. Our official CAP project is going to be refurbishing La Culata’s basketball half-court by leveling, painting, and installing volleyball nets. We hope it will leave an impact on this sports-loving community. After breakfast, we bussed to La Culata and took our first look at the project site. We worked for an hour or so by sweeping up and picking up the trash around the court. Sadly, we forgot to bring work gloves, so the prickly weeds kind of hurt :c. Nevertheless, we did a solid job cleaning up the area! Afterwards, we came back to our hotel and enjoyed a lunch of lasagna, salad, and bread. Then, 4-5 of us went out with Felix to the local hardware center with our wonderful contractor. We bought the necessary materials and helped out by picking out the cheapest options for the (always useful!) paint rollers, AND got an extra discount!! Coming back, we held a short workshop to work on our letters of appreciation. Then, after our routine English Tutoring, we enjoyed empanadas bought from an immigrant Venezuelan family with the most amazing (!!!) dipping sauce! For dinner, we closed out with ham and cheese sandwiches and soda. We’re all super excited and pumped to work on our CAP projects for the next couple of days! We also can’t wait to see all of you in less than three days (but we will deeply miss the Dominican Republic as well ;-;)

Hey Jordan, Maggie, Amanda and Alexa
Your cap project sounds like it’s going to be lots of fun . I hope you all get to use a power tool. I hope your trip is going great and you all are having a good time.
To all glimpsers: I can’t wait to see your work on the basketball court. You all will do an amazing job . Also , before your trip comes to an end, make sure you’ve talked to everyone and your group is finding a way to stay in touch after the trip. Make sure to give thanks to your GG leaders and program coordinators. And really try to stay in touch with one another.
Thanks for the great recap of today! Your CAP project sounds fantastic and will provide a very nice benefit for the community! Looking forward to welcoming you all back home soon, but in the meantime keep on learning, helping and enjoying!
Yay Ana!! You guys finally started your CAP and it sounds like the sports community will have a new sport to play. I’m proud that you guys had to go through that moment of stress because you all bounced back and through of a new project to execute… nice. Have fun y’all, I’m sure the CAP will be a huge success. Don’t forget to thank your GG leaders for helping you out to the process, y’all should really be grateful for them, even if you don’t like some of them, lol.
Good luck!
P.S. Where are the pictures!? I want to see the work you guys are doing! What is this a novel!?
ANA! DON’T FORGET MY KEY CHAIN!!!
Glad a decision was made for the CAP project. Your group seemed to model flexibility really well this trip. From a cancelled flight & left behind leader, to changing plans due to weather or other curcumstances, it always sounds like you all were resilient. Can’t wait to see pics of the project, before during and after 😉 See you soon Alexis. Much love momma
Grace,
Hope you are enjoying Dominican Republic life and culture. Mom and I can’t wait to see you. ❤️❤️
