Today is our second day here in Leon, Nicaragua but Day 3 of our Global Glimpse experience, and it’s all about culture!

The day started with a visit to the Myths and Legends (Mitos y Leyendas) Museum after a hearty Nicaraguan breakfast of corn tortilla, rice, beans and eggs with tomato-based  sauce.  At the museum, we learned about Gigantona y Pepe Cabezon, and many legendary characters of the Nicaraguan folklore. At the end of the museum visit, we were pleasantly treated to a Marimba exhibition by a local musician.

We headed to the Central Park of Leon just before lunch to interact for the first time with Nicaraguans by asking questions related to their culture. We also asked them about American culture. It was great to interact with the local people, both young and old.

We traveled to Sutiava using public transportation, where the indigenous people of Xuchialt had lived for generations. We visited the Talleres Xuchialt where we learned to dance a folkloric dance using zapateado and sencillo dance steps, how to do art using sawdust and listened to two Nicaraguan folk songs sung by one of the resident artists.

In honor of the day’s theme, we had indio viejo for lunch and vigoron for dinner. Both are typical Nicaraguan cuisines.

Note: We braved the 102 degree temperature doing all of these activities. “WOW”? Yes, “WOW”!
