Today was Shadowing a Highschool Student Day. We woke up earlier than usual which tired out a group of the students, but after eating another great breakfast made by the staff of El Chico we had to rush to the public bus. We ended up running to catch up with a packed bus. When arriving at the school we had past the time waiting for the opening assembly playing or watching basketball. Once we had been greeted by our shadow students they brought us to the classroom where they have about 4 classes a day. A difference between Nicaraguan schools and American schools is the teacher comes to the classroom rather than the students coming to the teacher. In my situation the teacher didn’t show up to math and instead of having a substitute they were trusted to handle the assignment on their own. Those who we shadowed were able to speak english really well. A lot of them had been taught by a school in Managua which is based on the high schools in America.

Shadowing a High School Student

After eating lunch at the hostel we had free time. During this time majority of us went to the internet cafe to get a hold of their families and catching up on their social media. Eventually we had to prepare for our future Community Action Project (CPA) and prep for our english tutoring we will be doing from 5:45 to 8:00. We were split into groups from basic and intermediate, teaching ages ranging from around 9 to adults. Everybody enjoyed teaching and seeing the progress their student had achieved, looking forward to the future classes we have during this trip. All in all, our highlights include learning about the differences between High Schools here and the schools we went to back at home and teaching while growing bounds with everybody.
