Our first activity of the day was visiting ADIC, a program where women and youth work together for a better tomorrow by teaching and learning about their natural rights. There we had the opportunity to engage with the youth by playing games, such as soccer, and watching an original play they had rehearsed for two months. We had an amazing time with the students, whether we were getting competitive in a tournament or playing a challenging game called “black and white tiles.”  The excitement we had was better expressed with actions, rather than words. Throughout the soccer game,  Exequil made sure that the kids had a chance to score a goal and that winning was not a key factor for us. He constantly repeated, “It’s not about us, it’s about them,” as he was telling us to let the kids have more space to play.

Later in the day, we had our second Community Action Plan meeting. During this meeting, volunteers in the community presented projects that we will soon undertake. Everyone was highly engaged, as we brainstormed ideas of how to bring the project to life. For the last event of the day we had our first tutoring session with Nica students. While the language barrier was apparent for some students, they still found ways to communicate. We had the opportunity to learn more about students’ daily lives, as well as teaching them about ours.
