Hola! Our names are Peter Miles and Tevon Elcock. Today the group visited the border between Haiti and the DR. We stopped in Elias Pina and listened to a speaker talk about trade between Haitians and Dominicans’ and the silent respect between the two groups. As leaders, we struggled to keep our cohorts calm about the guards, guns, and the amount of checkpoints protecting the border. However, we stayed together and did not run into any trouble. We experienced life at the market and how crowded it was. We came to an understanding that these people needed to make a living and did not mind standing in a hot market. This tour revealed how Haiti struggled in comparison to DR and how we should think twice before judging immigrants. The ride back to the hotel, once again, presented no problems. Janice, one of the GG coordinators, was a big help at all of the checkpoints with her compassion, courage and commitment.
“Remember, remember always that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.”- Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Wow. Sounds like another educational, enlightening day, that was very humbling as well. Glad every one enjoyed themselves and learned how difficult life can be and the struggles that come with some countries. Happy to read your GG coordinators are taking good care of you and have the smarts to deal with the local authorities and population.
