“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” – Maimonides

Hello, my name is Claire Krugler and I was El Lider Del Dia for Day 6. Today we focused on the importance of sustainability and how it is the key to success when providing aid to developing countries.

The first activity consisted of us performing a skit that showed us the difference between helpful and harmful aid. After the seminar, we took a bus ride to San Ramon where we met with the ladies of Los Mujeres del Plomos, the organization that we are partnering with for our Community Action Project! We met with them previously on Culture Day and learned more about what their organization does. Today we talked with them again to discuss the projects and the necessities that they need in order to be successful. For the rest of our time in Nicararagua, we will be helping Los Mujeres del Plomo in whatever way we decide in the next couple of days.

After that we went back to the hostel and heard Jose, a member of the organization Joven Nica, speak. Joven Nica is an organization that helps young adults who face socioeconomic obstacles find jobs through internships and practicum.

Once we had dinner, we walked over to Colegio San Luis, the Catholic school that we will be teaching English classes at for the rest of our Global Glimpse experience. We split into groups of four and taught classes of around 30 students ranging from beginner to advanced levels. Everyone really enjoyed teaching English and I, along with my other Global Glimpsers, look forward to the many more nights of tutoring.

After tutoring English, we walked over to the square where hundreds of people were watching the Matagalpa vs. Leon baseball championship. I hope this isn’t a spoiler, but Matagalpa won the series! Yay! Viva Matagalpa, viva!

So far, my experience in Matagalpa, Nicaragua and in the Global Glimpse program has been nothing but amazing. I have made such amazing friends who are great leaders that make this experience even better. I am constantly learning something new every day, ranging from Nicaraguan culture to aid and development. Although we have many more challenges to come, I am excited to continually be pushed past my limits each and every day. Adios!
