Hey guys,

Our day started off by waking up at 7 AM and getting ready to work like a local at the Local Mercado. We had the opportunity to help local workers with selling their merchandise. It was a great experience for all our students since we had to come up with creative ways to sell goods – we came up with great puns and others came up with great dances. Most were lucky enough to sell at least more than two products. After lunch was delivered at our work, we headed to Sandalias Tosca where we got to meet the manager Hisel Martinez . She began as a secretary at the company and slowly worked her up to be manager then board member. We witness the hard work and quality of creating a sandal through touring the small factory. Although it may be a small factory, you could tell the workers were working fast and committed to such a simple product. This taught us the difference between ethical and unethical work where one may sit at a table desk all day and earn a good salary compared to one who has to work out in the field and down in a factory earning as much as 200 dollars a month. There is also dignity in work, no matter how physical or intellectual is. We also think that workers should be respected such as being given breaks, a living wage, and recognition for their hard work whether that is in the factory on in the office. From seeing the factory workers laboring in the humid climate, we learned to be grateful for what we already have in life and to accept some things don’t come as easy to others in life.
