Hola amigos!

Nuestros nombres son Reena y Jina (la vegetariano), and we were los lideres del dia for Working Like A Local Day (July 7th)! Today was a well-deserved day off for our wonderful teachers, Ms. Andres and Ms. Greer, so we were on our own (With Elisa and Brayan, of course!). We started the day off at 6 with the typical gallo pinto for breakfast. Then, we went on a field trip to La Estacion (a local market) to experience how people here in Leon work. As co-leaders of the day, we had the special privilege of riding in a taxi while everyone else journeyed by foot. In small groups, we worked with local vendors for 4 hours and surprisingly ran into the other Leon delegation (we weren’t the only Asians for once!). We bagged vinegar, attracted customers, helped make sales, and competed with each other to see who was best at being a local. It was an enlightening experience for everyone as we were able to see how hard the locals work for the little profit that they make. We learned to work hard and balance the desire for profit with gaining experience for the future!

For lunch, we had fried chicken, which was a welcome change (Jina ate vegetables which was just as nice!). We parted ways with our locals and enjoyed a free afternoon! Some of us went to the internet cafe, some of us took power naps, and others went shopping with our fabulous leader Brayan.

We carried out with our typical evening routine of gallo pinto for dinner followed by English tutoring. During our nightly meeting, we announced the winners of our competition, and gave them prizes of hats and lollipops (Congrats to Rebecca, Lorenzo, and Estrella!).

We’re all doing great going into our last week in Nicaragua! It’s bittersweet because we miss you guys back at home, but we’ll make the most of the rest of our time here in Nicaragua.
