Hola Tigueres!

Coming at you live from the DR it’s Nina and Audrey. Today we started off the day bright and early at 7 am. As per usual, the breakfast item of the day was toast (Audrey recommends peanut butter, but Nina doesn’t). We packed up for our long day of CAP delivery on day 2. On the road, many of us enjoyed singing our favorite songs. Turns out a lot of people like Chappell Roan. Promptly at 9:15, we arrived at the CAP site for another grueling day at work! Combating the sweltering heat of the beating sun, we continued digging holes for our benches. The popular instrument of choice was the pickaxe. Many of us got to live out our Minecraft dreams of using a pickaxe. We also prepared by tying rebar (Audrey was GOATED ‘greatest of all time’ with the pickaxe and Nina received 2 comments on her technique being perfect). Others worked diligently mixing concrete, a task that was proven to be harder than expected. Thankfully, we have some muscles on our team. We worked for a couple of hours before returning back to our home base for lunch. Today’s meal was the expected rice, beef, salad, and a lovely mix of steamed vegetables.

We then returned to our CAP site to continue shoveling, which is a type of labor that many of us were new to. The afternoon tasks consisted of Mixing cement, cleaning the area, and washing the tools. During this time we had an ongoing YouTube playlist, where students could share their music tastes. Some popular songs of the day were “Call Me Maybe”, “Bailando”, and “… Baby One More Time”. Some of us used this time to practice Spanish with the locals, especially when the sweetest lady came by with Soursop juice (a refreshing fruit also known as Guanabana). We rallied the group together to prepare to leave around 4 pm. We went back to our home base to shower and refresh for the night. Today we lucked out with an unusual 2 hours of rest time before cena (dinner). Touching back to our American roots, we had banging burgers! Some kids went back for seconds and the fries were fabulous (it only makes us more excited to return home). We wrapped up the day with our daily nightly meeting where we discussed today’s questions regarding the importance of teamwork (because teamwork makes the dream work). After a sparse conversation (because everyone is exhausted) we passed the torch to our fellow Global Glimpses (we will keep them anonymous as a surprise for tomorrow)! The passing of the torch ceremony, if not already mentioned, includes showing off a talent. Last night, Nina taught the group a Polish staple Dzień Dobry which literally translates to good day and is used in replacement of hello most of the time. Audrey led the class through a mini ballet lesson, including the five positions and the classic tendu. That’s all! Nina and Audrey signing off. See you all soon!!
