Hello Glimpser family and friends!!
This is Sydney Cerri and Lucy Malamud-Roam! We were today’s leaders for the Community Action Project (CAP) delivery day one. Today, we woke up bright and early at 7:00am. We then walked to Onaney and ate yucca, passionfruit, and sausages.
From there, we bused to the community that we’ve been working with: Arroyo Loro. Arroyo Loro is a community bursting with children eager to learn, but the school they currently are taught in is in poor shape. The children are cramped into small rooms, where it makes it hard for students to focus, lacking a roof, they are at the whim of the weather for whether they can attend that day. Global Glimpse was invited to help the community better the conditions for these blossoming youngsters. The group was able to work as a team by painting a beautiful mural, fixing the fences and roof, and laying cement for the basketball court.
When we arrived at Arroyo Loro, we were instantly welcomed into the school by the faculty and all simultaneously got to work.
By half past 12:00pm, we had accomplished so much by working as a team. We were able to lay sand and concrete for the basketball court, apply our base layer of white paint onto the walls, and fix the fence. We had a quick break for lunch, and, after several more hours of hard work, we finished up our first CAP day! You’ll hear loads more about that tomorrow!
In the ladder part of the day, we had a highly anticipated hour and a half of free time, during which we made the most of our time exploring this beautiful city.
At four, we headed back to the hostile to get ready for our final day of English tutoring. The group walked to the nearby high school for a bittersweet lesson. We all have come to love our students so much, so saying goodbye was difficult, but knowing we had made a difference in their lives was worth it. We broke the tension with a fun dance party. “Sydney danced like a pro”, Lucy said. And Lucy sure had a good attitude!
Overall, it was an eventful day for the Glimpsers, and we can’t wait for tomorrow!
Shout outs!

I’m so proud of you, especially with you being the leader of the day on a CAP day! What you guys are doing for this school sounds really awesome. I hope you’re having lots of fun in the DR! Has it stormed on you guys at all? My CAP project last year was a very soggy experience… Back home you’ve missed a massive heat wave and also an earthquake with an epicenter at ECHS.
Miss you!
-Grace Rusin 🙂
ps. I expect to hear all about your trip in person when you get home
Hi, Lucy!!! Wow…ya all are busy little beavers on your awesome projects!!! I love the dance party idea as I’m a sound believer in the joys of music and dance. I can’t wait to see your pictures!!
Much love and hugs,
Nina
Thank you Sydney and Lucy for your daily blog. Wow, it sounds like all of you have accomplished a lot today with your CAP project! Can’t wait to see pictures of your handiwork!
To Kaylyn-anticipating reading your upcoming blog. By the way, today (Wed. 6/21 at approx. 12 noon) we experienced a minor earthquake (magnitude 3.3) centered 1 mile SE of El Cerrito. I was off from work today and was upstairs when the house kind of shook. Luckily nothing fell off the shelves or was broken, nevertheless still unnerving-this time being so close to home- and a reminder I need to get emergency kits for us.
Also want to remind you when packing your suitcase for the trip home, don’t put any fragile items in there. It would be best to wrap the item(s) with some t-shirts and carry it in your backpack. Can’t wait to see you Friday!
Love Mom and Dad
Hi Lucy! Sounds like your doing a great job! And having fun too! Love you!
Mary
Hi Sydney Baby,
Finally, get to hear from you directly. So sorry about not sending you more comments. I was really confused by the different blogs. I wasn’t sure if were in all the different excursion trips of San Juan because the dates were always posted as 6/9. Now, one from you and Lucy, we are so excited. I’m glad you are having a wonderful time, meeting new people, and making friendships. Your group did a lot of work for the community and we’re so proud of you and your team. I can almost see you there showing your dance moves, especially the Usher side step.
We’re so happy you’re almost home. We are counting the days until we meet again and we can give you a giant hug 🙂
Wishing a safe journey back!
Love you!!!
Mom, Dad, Cole & Lonesome Maxi
