Today was our second Community Action Project (CAP) day. The quote that the day was: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” by Margaret Mead. This quote embodies the concept that in order to succeed there must be one individual to initiate the change they want to see. But, in order to complete the change, there has to be multiple individuals that must work together to accomplish the common goal. Today our delegation demonstrated the intent of this quote, we started to construct tables for foster kids at Barrilete. The purpose of these tables was to provide a proper foundation for these kids, due to the fact that they lacked stable tables and workspace to write on.

The day started early at 7:00 A.M. with breakfast at Imabite. Shortly after we hopped on a bus for 20 minutes, arriving at Barrilete at around 8:20. We were welcomed by the bright smiles of the foster kids and their loving hugs. We were awed by their aspiration and determination. Despite this, we knew we had a long day ahead of us so we proceeded to assemble the tables. The construction team got started by building the foundation for the tables (legs and the board), and by making proper measurements. With the help of Maria’s sons, they sanded pieces of wood and screwed the legs onto the boards with nails and screws. By noon, three of the four tables were already built! After lunch they managed to finish all four of the tables by 2:00 P.M.

The construction team then passed on their tables to the creativity team who were in charged of painting and designing the tops of the tables. They painted the tops of each table with the base colors of blue, yellow, and white. However they were only able to finish the first layer of pant on each table since the paint took a while to dry. At around 4:30 P.M. everyone was covered in paint and sawdust, but we knew in our hearts that the result was going to be worth it. After the long and exhausting day, we headed back to our hostel. Everyone was going to appreciate the long nights sleep, thinking about all the happy faces we were going to see the next day when we present them with our gift.
