Hey, family and friends! I’m Mallie Sovan-Soeung and today I had the opportunity to be El Lider Del Dia for the second day of our Community Action Project (CAP). I really had to step out of my comfort zone by projecting my voice and leading the pack to make this a successful and productive day for the whole delegation.
We got a chance to sleep in a little with a wake up call at 8am. We headed to the project site, Asociacion Ninas y Ninos del Fortin, after breakfast. We had a long day ahead of us, but we knew exactly what needed to be done. We had about a six hour time frame to execute our tasks for CAP. I was very pleased with the amount of work that was done today. I noticed that everyone was working hard and together as a team for a majority of the time. Everyone seemed to enjoy getting their hands dirty today and having a little fun by jamming along to the music from the small, portable speakers and an old iPod. Even the children who were there enjoyed watching us in anticipation of their new space to play and learn.
As we got closer to the end of the day, although we had a good amount of work that still needed to be done, everyone was feeling tired and materials were running low. For example, the group that was painting tables and benches and the group that was restoring the playground structure were running extremely low on paint. So once again, our team leaders for CAP will need to wake up early tomorrow to run some errands to get the necessary supplies for the execution of the project.
Lunch was delivered to the CAP site from our usual comedor. With our meal, we had our fresh mango juice packaged in little bags that locals call bolsitas. It was definitely a new experience for me, drinking juice out of a plastic bag. We were also surprised with desserts along with our lunch. We had fresh mangos and everyone’s favorite snack, a sweet, triangular bread called pico, from a local bakery.
For dinner, we were all again surprised because we were served a ham sandwich on white bread with a side of fries. I’m sure this is what got everyone in a good mood for English tutoring. It was a nice meal after a long, productive day of painting, digging, pulling, planting, watering, and playing that was done today. Tomorrow we will all finalize our Community Action Project and include all of the small details to show that we take pride in our hard work.
Great job! I know everyone there appreciates all the hard work you guys are doing. It is amazing how you all are pulling toghether and working as a group. Natalie, I think the jr lifeguard program for Nathan was a good suggestion. He seems to be enjoying it as well as learning a little bit about emergency life saving techniques. Hope you are all well, glad you are experiencing so many new things. Stay safe, love you!

I cant wait to see how everything turns out. It’s only day 2 and I can already see a difference.
A little teamwork can make a big difference and it doesn’t always need huge amounts of money to make things better
I feel like I am learning along with the rest of you.
Sophia- a few more days and you’ll be covered in cat hair once again.
I feel very proud of you for being willing to give up what you’ve always known for something that might not have been easy for you.
If you happen to have free time and can get to the market, can you ask in country guide where to get cuajada? Tio thought I would bring some back but he didn’t tell me until i was home! If you wrap it in plastic bag, it should be fine in checked luggage. Don’t worry if you can’t get it. He said his brother and sisters are coming next month so someone will bring it for him.
Did you get something small for obahchan? Small wooden box maybe? Don’t worry too much though if no time or money.
Love mom

While you are all in the midst of doing hard physical labor, battling heat, humidity, mosquitos, cockroaches, termites and other untold challenges, we as your parents and family want you to know that we are extremely proud of you for electing to be involved in this incredible program this year. We know that you could’ve opted to do any number of other things with your summer and know that you are engaged in something that is building your character and helping to define your own sense of purpose in the future. When it’s all over, you will miss your new found friends, the thrill of adventure in a different place, your motivated students and, yes, even the heat and gallo pinto…but you will also know that you invested 3 weeks creating meaningful and purposeful experiences for yourselves and for others. Hang in there…the CAP progress looks great! Can’t wait to have you back home and to hear all about your time in Leon…
Take care and we love you! Your parents and your family…
