We began our day learning about Nicaragua’s history. At the Museo de la Revolucion (Revolution Museum), we heard firsthand accounts from people who actually fought in the revolution in 1979 and later against the US-funded Contras. While hearing survivor stories, we unpacked how the Sandinista government affects the current political landscape of Nicaragua. We toured Leon and visited the vibrant murals that adorn the city’s walls and the Cathedral of Leon. Today, we received an in-depth look at who shapes the history that’s told and why. We were inspired by our tour guide named Juan, who despite fighting in the army at age 14 and experiencing unspeakable trauma, broke through his past and became grounded in hope.
