QOD: How has the history of Estelí shaped its present?

After a wonderful breakfast of Gallo Pinto (rice & beans), plantains and eggs, the students attended our academic seminar on history & politics. We then went on a walking tour of Estelí. We visited the city Museum where we saw artifacts of the Nicaraguan revolution. We then visited the Cathedral with its ornate interior. It was originally made of adobe but was refurbished several times in its long history.

We also visited Parque Central directly across from the Museum. Parque Central was designed for the children but has many merchants who sell various products and services. There is also free Wifi in the park, which is provide by the Nicaraguan government.

After lunch we continued our tour to Casa de Cultura. Artist Julio Moreno was very engaging as he told us the story of revolution through his Mural’s. During a tumultuous history, Julio and many other artists faced censorship from the government for many of their political mural’s. Julio shows numerous positive messages in his mural’s regarding the community. He continues to host classes for the Nicaraguan youth to help them express their creative perspective. He believes that this will continue to promote the artistic culture of Nicaragua.
