QOD: What role does art place in preserving local customs and traditions?
Early jumpstart to the day! We embarked on a field trip to El Tisey to visit Don Alberto. After a hour long bus ride we arrived and began our ascent into the mountains. La Caminata (The Hike) was beautiful and tranquil but was an intense challenge. Don Alberto was very humble and passionate about his ability to create sculptures. He believed that he was destined to create these magnificent pieces of work. Don Alberto escaped the problems of the revolution by sculpting traditional pieces of art that shape the culture of Nicaragua. Although he is a man with modest means, he takes pride in his life’s work because it has impacted many people around the world.
The journey back was equally challenging however; we were treated with beautiful scenic views to keep our spirits high. The bus ride home was fun filled with music and laughter although everyone was physically spent. We arrived at our hostel (El Chico) to a delicious lunch.
Our second field trip was another visit to the Casa de Cultura, where we learned how to make Tarjates de Tush (corn husk cards). As we worked on this new art form, we witness local student practicing for a quinceñera. Artist Jorge, spoke passionately about the history, tradition and culture of Nicaragua. He described the beauty of Nicaragua as the diverse practices of culture in many cities.
We left today’s experiences with a profound respect for the resilience and pride of Nicaraguan culture.
