Que lo que (hi in Dominican)!

This is Alexa and Devon! We just wrapped up day 4, which was Aid and Development. To start off our day, we had to wake up at 7 o’ clock and travel to a small community called La Culata, which is not the richest community in resources but is healthy and vibrant with culture and knowledge. Juanjo Castillo, the director of a baseball ministry named Cristo El Rey, has been transforming the lives of young men for many years. The theme we had closely followed throughout meeting Cristo El Rey, and later on in the day, had been aid and development. After the first trip, we visited Scott Coppa in La Flores which is another community around the area of Constanza. Mr. Scott Coppa was very passionate and fun about the work he has done in his community. He talked about actually LIVING like the people in the community so it establishes trust and respect between both parties. He really inspired us to do something that would last and would actually impact the community for our CAP project. Once we finished our visit with Scott, we had done our first English tutoring classes! Many of us in our group had a wonderful time interacting with the students and experiencing how passionate they are to learn English, and while some of us had been anxious prior to the classes we are now ready for tomorrow’s classes and very excited to be with the students again!

A highlight that I (Alexa) would have for the day would probably be interacting with the kids at the English tutoring! Seeing first hand how passionate and engaged they are with what they are learning makes me equally as passionate to teach them more English tomorrow for our second day of tutoring. A highlight for me (Devon) would be teaching the very first “ET” or English Tutoring, even though I only had one students he was super fun and intelligent.

Taking something back from this experience (Alexa) is being more appreciative of the education I am taking back in America. Since there are no issues with trying to get education back in the US, seeing other people getting a chance at that when many others like them cannot get that had opened my eyes to that and it’ll be a constant reminder to myself not to take things like my own education and studies for granted.  Taking something back from this experience would be always trying to give back to my community to make it a better community than it was yesterday.
