Hola Familias,

Today we had the pleasure of being the first student leaders of the day. We started the day off by eating a delicious breakfast, prepared by our lovely chef, Doña Vera. Our breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs and pancakes. After our meal, we had a quick mental warm-up before heading out to a nearby coffee plantation to learn more about the country’s main export and the history of how Costa Rica came to be. After a hike back down that left most of us sweaty we went back to our home base for a quick lunch of pork chops and potatoes we then left once again to visit our lovely Karla Gomez, who gave us a presentation on the environment yesterday. She runs a small cheese farm in a little, nearby town called Santa Cruz, where she makes Artisinal Turrialba cheese. We also got the opportunity to milk cows and make our own cheese before playing a fun game that she prepared us for in order to understand more about how she makes cheese sustainably. To end the day, we headed back home to eat dinner and have our daily nightly meeting. We sang happy birthday to Mieko and Brianna and had ourselves some Tres leches cake, which was kindly made by a local resident. Overall, we are happy and proud to be the first students to experience being the first Leaders of the Day and we are thankful for this opportunity to develop our leadership skills while also hanging out with our friends. We are excited to pass the torch on to the next wonderful leaders.
