Hello Everyone!
It’s Jamie, here to update you guys on yet another long successful day of being a Glimpser. Today we had to wake up a bit earlier than usual at 6:30am to get ready for Poverty Day. We enjoyed a yummy breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and delicious juice at Imabite. Afterwards we headed back to the hostel and had a cool and meaningful academic seminar on the topic of poverty in which we focused on the true meaning of poverty and what poverty means to us. We read an article about poor rural families in Nicaragua living on less than two dollars a day.
Afterwards, we went on a field trip to the local dump site here in Leon. There we got the opportunity to check out the conditions of the site and meet all the people who worked there among the burning trash. Even though their working conditions were not ideal, the people had a positive attitude and seemed excited to see us. After walking through the site, we challenged them to a soccer match in which we lost. To thank them we handed out sandwiches and sodas. We learned to keep an open mind and not to judge people based off their living and working conditions. Out of respect for the people who work at the dump, we didn’t take pictures today but you can definitely look forward to more pictures tomorrow!
Originally we planned to visit an orphanage to hang out with the kids but they were on vacation. Instead we got an hour of free time in which the majority of us went to the internet cafe to contact family and friends. Later in the day we went to our English tutoring class for the second time. Today the students were more interactive and eager to learn which made the class fun for both students and teachers. After our nightly meeting we started “living like a local” by not using electricity, taking bucket showers (see photo below), and using candles. Overall, the day was busy and a good learning experience. I can’t wait to see how tomorrow goes!
Hi Zoie. I know the living like a local day was thought to be a challenge ahead of time. I can’t wait to read the blog about your day. Bucket showers should be interesting! Good luck. Me, dad and Lexie were all so happy to hear your voice today.
Lexie is going to sing at her swim teams talent show. She picked Big Girls Don’t Cry by Fergie. Hopefully she does well! Well, I’ve gotta go. All the animals send their love! Growls and barks from Samora and Scrappy; meows and hisses from Cinder, Colorado and Maggie; clucks from the hen house; sweet bunny yawns from BunnyFoofoo, and pretend finger biting from Mr Turtle. XXOOXXOO from me!
Hi Annie! Sorry we missed your call. We all miss and love you and glad to see you in pictures!
Sounds like you learned something very meaningful today. Although I think visiting the orphanage would have been eye opening I was so excited to receive a call home. So I am glad they were on vacation ?
I look forward to reading your new blogs every night. Keep them coming!
We all love you Olivia! Hope you have an awesome day tomorrow!
Love and miss you,
Mom

You all are doing amazing work .. It’s a very good experience to learn how people are so positive and live happily with the basic requirement of life .. Ayesha I am so happy and proud of you .. Keep up the the hard work ..love you ❤️❤️
How’d the bucket shower go, Sydney? With the water shortages in many places here in the U.S., that might not be a bad idea here. As for candle light, I think that’s preferable sometimes to harsh electric lighting. Not too great to read by, but I don’t know how much time for reading you have, plus available reading material.
Love you tons.
