After waking up and eating breakfast, we were visited by a guest speaker named Angie who works in Nicaragua as a manager of a nonprofit organization. Angie shared stories and insights regarding the problems with Nicaragua’s education system and her own experiences. We all enjoyed listening to her stories and were able to compare and contrast our own schools with those in Nicaragua.
After dinner, we had our first English tutoring session. We were divided into 5 groups to teach the classes: beginner (adults and kids), intermediate (kids and adults), and advanced. We all had a bit of a hard time at first, but the students were all very hospitable and helped us become adjusted. However, after they became more comfortable with us, the classrooms became quite rambunctious and now we all have much more admiration for our own teachers. We all look forward to continuing the sessions and becoming friends with our students!
Happy 4th of July!!!
Great insight into what a teacher goes through!! Thanks for sharing! You are all making a difference in the lives of the people around you, even on a slow day.
Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Christopher…have been following your adventure on a daily basis and loving the pictures. What an awesome life experience, one that you will never forget. And to be giving back to underprivileged children is bound to be very humbling. So proud of you. By the way, did Dad tell you that Arizona lost to Coastal Carolina in the championships????????????? It’s been all over the news down here for days. Between the almost football championship at Clemson, and now this, we are finally making a mark on the map of sports in the USA! Be safe and we love you. We’ll keep following you until you land safely back in the USA. xo
Hi Christopher from the Palmentieros down south! Love seeing all the pictures from the group and learning about how you’re living your life for three weeks. Travel safe, be well and impart your knowledge on these amazing people who are so fortunate to have this group lead and teach! Can’t wait to hear all about your experiences when you return to the states. We love you and miss you – LeLe, Uncle Dave, David, Margaux and Caroline. xoxo
Sounds like you guys had a very busy day!! I hope after the guest speaker, eating, traveled diarrhea, English tutoring, you had some time to light some fireworks????? HAHAHA. The bay areas been popping with fireworks the last 2 weeks leading up to the 4th of July. You would think it would be easy to purchase them if you can hear them in every neighborhood, but it was so hard to find them. LOL. I had to go on Craigslist and go in a sketch house. Thought I was dead. Luckily I’m not so that’s why I’m commenting to you guys! Hello to Tiffany and Lynna! Thanks for the FB message aww. It made my day when I woke up and saw it. Wish you and your family (delegation) could see the fireworks. Yours truly……

I am sure that all your teachers will appreciate your new found appreciation for the challenges that arise when teaching. Oh! This is just a suggestion (not sure how comprehensive your lesson plans are) but, you should try incorporating movement into your lessons. Yes, I know that you’ll probably get some complaints. BUT, it’s a great way to channel some of the class energy and still get them engaged in your subject matter. Split them up into groups/ pairs and have them race at spelling words or completing sentences. Or musical chairs and whoever is left standing has to spell a complicated word. There’s probably more creative ideas out there y’all can come up with but, you get the idea.(Side note: How hot is it over there? Carlos, WHY are you wearing a jacket?! Te me vas a desmayar.)
Are you teaching them any Spanish Rap songs? If so, I want to see the video.
