Hey guys! Today was a really inspiring day because we focused on education systems here in León. While León is one of the most intelectual cities in Nicaragua, there is still work to be done. Only about 29% of children in primary schools are expected to graduate and close to 500,000 children (3-12 years) never attend formal school at all. It was a big realization to be informed that while education in key in most countries, it is still a struggle to accomplish.
Our first speaker of the day Blanca Rosa Cruz took time out of her day to tell us about the incredible work she does as a vice principal at a special needs school in the Sutiaba neighborhood. There is still a widespread stigma towards special needs children that she constantly works towards breaking. We were all really inspired to hear that she teaches her students basic life skills (cooking, gardening, sewing) so they can live a more independent life. They also focus on teaching the hearing and sight impaired braille and sign language. She has a great passion for the children and we were happy that she was able to share that with us.
Later on, after our delicious lunch, we headed off to the high school (Colegio Modesto Armijo) on public buses in our uniforms. The aggressive braking and fast pace kept the group out their toes and excited for the journey to the school. When we arrived we met our next speaker Francisco Garcia who is the principal of the school. He informed us that having a passion for education is a key aspect every society around the world should have. We definitely have a new appreciation for the education we are offered in the US. One of the best parts of the day was when we interacted with the students and learned about their life. Playing games like basketball and soccer with them helped us connect with them more. It was a great experience that gave the group energy that they needed.
The next activity was continuing the second lesson in out english tutoring. There was a huge improvement in preparedness and confidence in our Spanish skills during this part. Connections between the English students and the glimpsers were made that made the lessons more interactive. We will get better as we go but it was great to see the improvement in just one day. I’m happy to say that the gilmpsers are also improving their spanish skills. Stay posted 🙂
Emily,
We are all so very proud of you! Words cannot describe the pride I feel at this moment. I am very proud to say that I am your mother. Keep up the good work Emmy Lou!
I agree with the above comments, I feel such a sense of pride in what you are all accomplishing, experiencing and the impact you are each making. Everyone that we share your stories with is touched and inspired by the experiences you are having. I am sure it is changing your lives and the lives of those you interact with, as it is changing us too living through your experience. The school comments and story really made me reflect on how we take for granted the education that we are afforded here; especially the high quality schools that we are fortunate enough to have in the Bay Area. At times we get caught up in the stress, pressure and competitiveness of the education system here, but understanding that so few in Nicaragua have the opportunity for education puts things here in a new perspective. Thank you for sharing your stories and experiences with us! You are each making a difference! Logan I am always proud of you, and so proud of this experience you were brave enough to want to embark on…you inspire me my dear son! You are an amazing role model to other; especially to your little brother who so looks up to you! Love you so much! Mom and Luke
