Today was our second and last free day of the trip. We got to venture around the city on our own and explore new sites around San Juan. We began our day by going out in groups to buy souvenirs and stock up on snacks. Since we’ve arrived, we have gotten more familiar with the people and the places around the city. A couple groups went to buy clothes and souvenirs and another group went to the bakery to buy desserts, also Marc bought an entire cake. Lately we have been very busy with activities so it was refreshing to spend a day without constantly being on the move, although it was unusual to not have such a tight schedule.

Along with buying snacks and souvenirs, a group of us got to got to a couple hardware stores and buy the materials needed for our Community Action Project. To ensure we got all the materials necessary for our CAP we brought along two carpenters and the leader of the women’s organization in Suarez. Even though we only had one Spanish speaker, we were still able to find everything we needed. Due the extremely prevalent language barrier, it took us longer than expected. So, our group was late to English tutoring prep at the Liceo.

Each one of us has the incredible opportunity to teach students from ages 8 to 50 years old four times a week. Everyday we teach, we have an hour to prepare our lesson plan for the students with the help of our ambassadors. It is a pleasure to see how engaged and excited our students are to learn English even though some have to walk over half an hour to receive these lessons.

Overall, today was full of adventures and memories we’ll never forget. We can’t wait to wait to start our CAP and contribute to this community as well as share this amazing experience with all of you back home.
