Today we had our second Free Day of the trip, where we all woke up at 8:30 am😀 which was great since we worked really hard at the farm yesterday. For breakfast we ate Gallo Pinto, avocados, and tortillas.
We used our free time to purchase materials to prepare for CAP, our community action project. We purchased materials on a strict budget of around 9,000 cordobas, which was split between our two projects. We all decided that for one project we were going to paint a mural for the students at a preschool called Santo Domingo. Luckily, Julio Moreno, a muralist that we became close friends with, will be accompanying us to help paint! For our second project, we saw that the playground area for the kids was not that safe to be playing on. So, we made it a mission to clean up the area and plant a variety of plants for the school. At this small preschool there were many sharp thorns and broken glass all over their playground. Our landscaping group bought materials to spruce up their playground as well as make it a whole lot safer.
For lunch we had Indio viejo, a typical Nicaraguan dish. We enjoy trying out many Nicaraguan dishes, and realizing that it is very delicious. After lunch we had more free time to finish purchasing materials for CAP, and to roam the city of Estelí. We also used this time to prepare for our English class and a talent show that we’re going to be performing with our students.
Our dinner was another typical Nicaraguan dish, that many of us really enjoyed and wanted more of. After we had plans to go to the movie theaters to watch Finding Dory at the multi-center, but at the last minute we found out that the movie would only be in Spanish with no subtitles. We were all super excited to watch the movie, but it made many of us sad with the change of events.
Luckily though we still had a good time at the multi-center where some played at the arcade, had ice cream, or had a nice nighttime view of the city. Overall, we’re all excited and eager to begin our community action projects at the preschool!
