Hello friends and family, today was a busy and exciting day! We started off with breakfast at Dilenia’s (toast and scrabbled eggs with carrot juice) to get our brains flowing. We learned and discussed Dominican customs… its differences and similarities to American culture. FUN FACT: did you know that Dominicans can fit up to 6 people on a motorbike?! On that note we also talked about ways we can stay safe and came up with some awesome group agreements to create a safe and productive learning environment as a unified group. In the afternoon we met some local youth from Constanza that are part of Global Glimpse’s Youth Ambassador Program (YAP). They gifted us some really fashionable handmade bracelets (Thank you). Glimpsers learned that they will be teaching English at a nearby school in partnership with the local youth and are looking forward to starting their classes tomorrow! After sharing some awesome tips on working with ELL students and creating fruitful lessons plans we headed out to explore Constanza in our city tour! We learned about the city and its history. In order to fully understand Dominican history we had to look back and visit some monuments that represented an significant period in the DR (colonial era, independence, dictatorships, transitions and current political affairs) Another FUN FACT: did you know that you can find decedents from Japan, Spain, Hungary, and Lebanon living in Constanza today? Well yeah! Today we were able to meet Mr. Teruki Waki, a Japanese decedent that migrated with his family after War World II/ during Trujillo’s dictatorship in the 50’s when he was only a year and a half. He’s lived his whole life in Constanza and currently has a business harvesting flowers/ roses for the local market. He talked about his and other’s migration process with a brief background about the migration experience of the Japanese community back in those days. We were able to ask him some great questions! We finished our city tour with some yummy paletas (popsicles from Splash!) at one of the many baseball fields found in Constanza, while we watched youth train for what it seemed like a great next game!
