Hello all!
My name is Alex Swanson! I have taught science for the past four years, two of them at a middle school in Rhode Island, and two at Impact Academy, here in Hayward. I am most passionate about Environmental Science as I love thinking about the intersection between people and the natural world, and how they impact one another. Outside of work, I spend most of my time active! I enjoy spending time outdoors with my amazing dog, Mocha, going on hikes, taking trips to the beach, and doing yoga.
I became a GG leader for a few reasons. I learned about the program in 2015 and met a few students that had returned from a trip and was amazed at how much they had grown. They spoke about their experience as ‘life changing’ and ‘incredible’ and I immediately wanted to be a part of it. As I learned more about the program, I realized what an incredible growth opportunity this would be not only for the students, but for me as well. In my class, I teach students about developing and developed countries, and the differences in opportunity and living conditions. I want to be able to speak to my students from experience, rather than what I have read from a book.
I can’t wait to meet and get to know all of the students on my trip, to grow as an educator, and watch students grow as leaders! We are all going to experience new things, food, people, sights, and so much more, and I can’t wait to live these experiences with all of you!
One week! Get excited!
Best,
Alex Swanson
