As you all prepare to embark on this immersive and eye opening experience, I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Willa Ivory and I will be one of your Global Glimpse Leaders, along with Tyree Alexander. I am so excited to be a part of your journey and will do all that I can to make sure you all have a great summer experience.
A little about me…
I am a native New Yorker, born and raised in Queens. I have a Master’s degree in Social Work from Fordham University and have been a Social Worker at the School for Democracy and Leadership (Brooklyn, NY) for the last three years. Travel, community service, and working with youth are three of my passions so partnering with Global Glimpse has been great and very fulfilling. This will be my first Global Glimpse trip but not my first international service learning experience. In April, I had the opportunity to travel to Jamaica to volunteer at a home for girls; spending time with the young girls and helping to make their home beautiful. I learned so much in one week and I know that your trip will be just as fulfilling.
A little more (random stuff) about me…
I am the youngest in my family. I like to read and listen to music (mostly R&B). I am really into sci-fi; my favorite author is Octavia Butler. I am a Big Brother fan. I tell corny jokes…and laugh at them. I’m a bit of a thrill seeker; I’ve been sky diving and I’m trying to go again. I cannot swim, unfortunately. I really like sour candy; it’s become a bit of a problem. I am very excited for this trip!
I know for many of you, this is your first time out of the country or traveling without your family. You will have an amazing time. Over the course of 18 days you will gain a new circle of friends, meet and help people who you may have never imagined being able to interact with, and see a new country. You will all return to New York City on August 10th completely different people; I am excited first hand your growth.
Tyree and I will be reaching out to you and your families soon to check in and answer any questions. Have an awesome start to the summer and I will see everyone in four weeks!
