Day 11 here at CONAMUCA, San Cristobal, Dominican Republic!
Today’s topic was “Immigration” and we started off the day with an Academic Seminar on immigration after breakfast. In this seminar, we were able to delve deeper into our own personal family histories as we analyzed our first, middle, and last names. Our GGL leaders posed this quote to us:
“Remember, remember always that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionaries” — Franklin D. Roosevelt
This quote very much encompasses what we learned throughout the day as we had three guest speakers come to CONAMUCA to share with us the struggles of Dominicans of Haitian descent. We, as Americans (+ all nationalities), must not forget that we too were immigrants at one point in our family history. The insecurity and discrimination that Haitians or Dominicans of Haitian descent face here in the DR on a daily basis blew my mind. With the recent constitutional amendments and bills that were passed in the DR, both groups of peoples suffer a tremendous amount of human right violations. With laws ranging from deportation to denial of documentation, these people put everything on the line to live in the DR because of the turmoil and corruption that they experience in their homeland (of Haiti).

The struggle that people of Haitian descent go through must not be simply ignored. That is why organizations like Reconoci.do protest and stage movements to protect the rights of these people. When Elena from Reconoci.do talked about how she was denied entrance into college due to her Haitian descent despite the fact that she was born in the DR, it made me reflect on all the blessings/opportunities/privileges that I had, which I mostly took for granted. Being denied entrance into college due to ancestry sounds absurd to us, but this is a reality for the people here.
Global Glimpse really does “Open the eyes of tomorrow’s leaders” and allows us youth to see for ourselves the different lives that people live all over the world.
Well, this was Amy Jung writing the blog post & it’s pretty late so I will be signing off.
PS. Hi Mom, Dad, + Claire
PPS. No Diana, I am not constipated(-:
Great day, prejudice is truly a global issue. Enjoyed your report Amy! Yes, we all have much to be thankful for. Olympics are underway and TV coverage seems much more complete than the last venue. Miss you Ella! Papa
I am curious to find out what dishes you are being served. Laurel’s back in Montana probably floating down a river today Saturday. Miss you much Ella! Mama
Hi Michelle , hope you are doing fine ! It is important to remember that your grandparents were also immigrants in Brazil and they had opportunities there as we have in USA, although their struggles were much greater than ours. Very sad to know what is happening even now in these countries nearby. You guys need to work hard for a better world for everybody . Saudades… TE amo ! Beijos,
Mamae
PS – Adorei ver voce nas fotos !

Hey guys! Immigration day was my favorite day out of my whole trip, so I’m glad you all appreciated it and took as much from it as I did. Claudia, I really miss you, and we mirror each other in the block at the end of Pre-Game, just fyi. And Kristian, Maria facetimes me now because of your absence, and she’s counting down the days until you come back. Okay, bye keep having amazing experiences out there. And learn more, because the DR isn’t the only country to treat Haiti poorly. Ok bye for real this time

hey michelle it’s me, this is the third time i’ve tried to comment on one of these posts and at this point im very confused as to why my comments aren’t showing up. anyway, on friday i went to outside lands and it was amazing except a wasp fell inside my shirt and stung me!!!!! i had to reach into my shirt and grab it and throw it far far away from me. other than that traumatizing event i had lots of fun with fran, we got up close to all the acts except grimes and j. cole. he played crooked smile and i thought of you. i’m gonna stop here and see if this comment gets posted, if it does ill comment again with more news. miss you!!!
Hi Erik, wow, what an interesting topic! you know that it is a topic that is very close to my heart. Please learn all you can. Be compassionate and kind, but most of all be grateful for everything you have. Find a way to help others whenever you can. Love you, can’t wait to have you back home.
Hi Ally:
Hope my message finds you well. How interesting this must’ve been for you. This was very close to home….like your maternal grandparents and your own parents were immigrants. Yes…..there are areas…that I’m sure unknowingly I was discriminated against. I’m sorry I just couldn’t sit down this weekend to chit chat. But now I have tons to tell you. The biggest and greatest news……Ashy’s offer for a small condo in Concord was accepted!! yes….she’s very excited to. You will get to have your room all to yourself…very soon….and yes….I know you will miss her. But atleast you can visit her when you don’t have school. I finally organized the garage once again……I worked on it myself then when papa came home…he helped me finish. You can now walk in it and not kill yourself. Ashy and I went on a little shopping trip to the RACK…I tried on 16 pairs of jeans…brought 4 of them home…and now have to take 2 back. I know….what energy I must’ve had. All is OK at home….papa really misses you. I’m just happy that you’re away and enjoying yourself. I saw Hannah Alter yesterday at church….and she said Hi. Maasi, Cookie and the boys take off for their Disney trip on Tuesday. The house will be peace n quiet for a few days…..Enjoy the last bit of DR…if I know you…..you will want daal and rice or kichadi upon your return. I’ll make either one so you can devour it. Hope you’ve been taking lots of pictures…..as I’ve enjoyed the group pics your group has been posting.
Love you lots!!!
Mummy, papa, Ashy and the Gang
Malcolm!!!!!
Ok so I been going bananas with out my babies…. But then when people ask me about u guys I get sooo filled up with pride and love telling them about both of you!
Can u believe these are ur last couple of days???? Days! Not weeks! Days!!!!! Enjoy them boo! I hope you’ve learned things you really wouldn’t have just sitting around here with Sammi lol so we’re doing chuck e cheese for Ari’s bday and Vic is having a 30th bday! Lol I can’t wait to see u pumpkin!!!!!
Hi Erik!
Immigration day sounds really cool, mainly because I didn’t have that day haha. Hope you’re learning a lot and having fun! Anyway, I got back home yesterday and I already miss Nicaragua like crazy 🙁 The trip really does fly by fast, so make the most of it! I’m still in touch with a lot of people on my trip but I’ll tell you more about that when I get back! Oh, and Outside Lands was really fun!! I’ll tell you more about that too haha. Also, kinda just got my wisdom teeth out this morning so it’s been a pain in the butt. I’ve been complaining about it to a bunch of people, but wish you were here so I could complain about it to you too!! Anyway, have fun and I’ll see you in a few days maybe!!
Amado hijo Erik
Te he extrañado mucho y quisiera que estuvieras aquí.
No me aguanto por tu regreso y que nos cuentes con detalles como ha sido tu experiencia en DR.
I’ve thought of you every day, but I have not made a bigger effort to write. Sorry.
Abuelita is in the hospital. Don’t worry you know she has been in and out since early this year.
Carlitos is on crutches but is not too serious. He will be able to play his baseball games this weekend.
CON TODO EL AMOR!
