CAP Complete!!!

Helloooo! It’s the leaders of the day, Genise and Melvin! We started the day with a 7am wakeup call followed by Los Tres Golpes for breakfast. We headed straight to the community action project (CAP) site where we immediately started working on both connecting the pipes, covering up those pipes with dirt, and continuing our progress on digging and shoveling out the rest of the pathway. At the start of the morning, a lot of people were tired yet dedicated to finish the last day strong and worked really hard on this final day of the CAP with the majority of people ending the morning shift motivated.

After having a break for lunch and enjoying carne de res and rice, we were about to leave when it started to thunderstorm, and we had to delay our departure. After ten minutes, the rain continued, and we couldn’t work in those conditions, so we had a change of plans. We were told that we were going to get ice cream to celebrate the end of our project; we were a little upset that we wouldn’t be able to complete our work and say goodbye to the community. We got on the open-aired truck and headed there, but we noticed that we had passed the ice cream shop and were headed to the CAP site. When we arrived, we were told that we would have to continue to work. After a bit of resistance and lot of commitment to our work, we finally finished and not only met our goal but exceeded it. We got a speech from the leader of the community, Ricardo, who told us how thankful he was that we had helped complete a project that was a year in the making, and we had finished it in three days. He told us to continue helping other communities and to enjoy our final days in the Dominican Republic.

We got our ice cream that we were promised and headed back to the accommodation where we had a self-reflection on all the days of CAP and how it would help others. From there, we had a delicious dinner that consisted of fried chicken tenders with fries and a new variety of juice that was pineapple. Once we finished our amazing last dinner at the accommodation, we headed on to nightly meeting where we shared about our final CAP day where everyone was satisfied with our work.  We got to share a bonus Big Love with Milan and Soraya for their amazing energy and connecting with everyone.
