Cap Day 1 (No. 2)

Hello families,
Today was very nerve-racking because it was our first official CAP DAY!!!! ? We started off our morning at 7:00am. Breakfast was very delicious. We had eggs, toast, and fruits such as pineapple and papaya. Immediately after breakfast, we went straight to the CAP site (Los Higos). There we prepared to start making cement for the floors. Honestly, we went in blindly not knowing how to really make the cement but thankfully we had two amazing construction workers supporting us and guiding us through the process. It was very difficult at first because the first step was to mix sand with the powdered cement. But over time it did get easier because we got used to mixing the sand with the cement. However, once we added the water, we were right back at step one. We were split into two different groups and rotated every 15 minutes, so no one overworked themselves. Everyone played a role and contributed in their own ways. Even when one group was resting on break, they still had something to do such as distracting the kids, so the kids didn’t get in the way and provided support to the people working at the time. Both groups contributed so well that we ended up finishing two rooms before we even got to lunch.

For lunch, we headed back to La Salle and had rice with lentils, salads, chicken or pork, and plantains. After lunch, we went right back to work. We got there at 2:00 pm and worked until 4:00 pm. During this time, it was the same routine as the morning, however, we were much more efficient this time. We ended up finishing the rooms with plenty of time to spare! During our breaks, we spent time playing with the kids, teaching them our favorite childhood games such as numbers and quack-a-dili-oso. After all this, we cleaned up and headed back home to La Salle for the evening.

We had around an hour of free time where we showered, played card games, read, or did anything else that interested us. After, we started drafting Letters of Appreciation where we showed love to our sponsors and supporters that made all this possible. We had dinner which was extremely delicious. Of course, Xavier went first after his “Lebron James” like performance during the CAP project while David had to wash all the dishes for losing “rock, paper, scissors” too many times. Today was a really productive and uplifting day. Everyone learned so much about themselves and each other, getting back together after resting for two days straight. We had so much fun leading the whole group together, having each other’s back, while picking up where the other one left off. We really appreciate everything we did today, and we are very proud of the whole JA2C group.

P.P.P.P.S (Malaik): HIIIII I MISS YOU GUYS SO MUCH

The mixing cement sounds very hard! It must have been satisfying to finish. It’s going to be so rewarding to complete the project after three days hard work. ?
You guys are doing a great job!

Hey.
Finally, we get to start with CAP day. I see you all pitching in to get the work done. This is a great skill to learn, which you will be able to use some day in the future.
As a matter of fact, my front stairs are chipping and falling apart right now, so Grayson, guess what you will be doing when you get back… Woo hoo… new steps for me!!! I can’t wait for you to put your new cementing skills to use.
Good luck with day 2 of CAP day!!
Love Mom

I am so impressed with all the work this group has done. I’m sure it is hard just meeting new people and spending 24/7 together. You all should be proud of yourselves.
In that note. Rachel so can I expect you can lay down a new cement walkway for our home. ??? I love you so much and miss you every day.

Chaya, glad you are feeling better! What are you making with the cement? Be sure to take a head count when you leave to ensure no one got buried under there. Lol. I am watching way too much crime scene investigation. The food sounds delicious, and the kids are so cute! Now I know what to make you for breakfast every morning… eggs, toast and fresh fruit! Enjoy the rest of the days there and drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated!

Malaik, Thank you soooo much for cheering up Chaya and giving her the books to read when she was not feeling well! That made her so happy! You are a very special person to do that for her, and so thoughtful! Hopefully I can say thank you in person! Enjoy the rest of your trip!!!!!!

Chaya, I forgot to mention, you may not have know this because you are in the DR, but Gojira was the opening band the Olymipcs in Paris. You have to see the recording, it is so cool. I wish we there. And Snoop Dog is hosting. Snoop is so cool, I wish he was our friend. Have fun!
