CAP Day 3 (No. 4)

Hi y’all this is Vinny and Charlie!

We are excited to share our final CAP day with you all. The wake-up call was 6:30 AGAIN, it was like waking up on a school morning. However, it got better once we got some food in our bellies at breakfast. We hopped over to Nutre Hogar and got started right away. The goal today was to finish everything that we started three days ago. The sewing group was ahead of the game and was practically already done with their project having made 13 out of 15 covers in the first two days. The gardening crew’s agenda was to finish planting the fruit trees, finish bordering the garden with rocks, and plant the rest of the vegetable seeds. The painting group hit the ground running and ended up having the most productive day of the three. Their goal was to finish with all the flowers, add a sunset, and finish all the fine details. We are happy to report that all three groups hit all their goals and more!!!

I learned today that I am a pretty good leader. My jobs were making sure people had water, they were taking breaks, and everyone had energy. What surprised me most today was how good of a leader I was. I was able to handle several responsibilities. This surprised me because yesterday I was panicking over different jobs as a leader. I am most proud of myself and my painting team for finishing strong with the mural. Raul carrying two water jugs to the bus was what inspired me because he gave me the confidence and time I needed to perform other responsibilities as a leader. Being Líder del Día was stress-inducing because I couldn’t eat right away even though I was super hungry. I couldn’t eat first because as the Líder del Día it was my job to make sure everyone got their food before I ate. I learned that I’m capable of leading a large group even when dealing with adversity.

Charlie:

One of the most important things I learned today was that it is best to give people space and let them step into leadership roles within their own groups. Throughout the day as the Líder del Día in charge of all three groups at once, I figured out that the best way to lead was to let the respective groups work without me giving a ton of instructions. I just told them the goal for the day and let them work. I was surprised by how well the painting team did in the last day to bring the mural together. They did a great job at working through some adversity and made a great final product. I am extremely proud of the gardening team because of how hard we worked to get the result we wanted. Throughout the three days of working it was constant hard work, but no matter how hot or humid it was we did a great job of pushing through and getting stuff done. I am prideful of our hard work coming together into a functional and sustainable final product. The people who inspired me the most today were the team of nurses who were teaching and playing with the kids all day. Without them, the kids at Nutre Hogar would not be able to make the recovery that is needed for their health. Their work is truly essential. Being Líder del Día was rewarding because I got a chance to work on all the projects we are doing to help Nutre Hogar. Seeing the change that our Global Glimpse trip contributed to was well worth the stress that came with the responsibility.
