Today, we learned about Costa Rica’s historical past and its growth as a sovereign country. The day started with a scenic bus ride out of Turrialba to Cartago, Costa Rica’s first capital. In Cartago, we visited its “plaza mayor” where we saw the original bell used to announce Costa Rica’s independence. Then, we moved on to Museo Municipal de Cartago; a UNESCO World Heritage monument, which used to be an army building and penitentiary. The museum also showcased a mural depicting Costa Rica’s history and culture.
From the museum, we visited the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles where we witnessed some pilgrims washing and drinking the water from the rock. We also learned that many people take the pilgrimage and bring offerings to the “La Negrita” for healing. Our visit to Cartago ended with a delicious lunch at Cocina del Santuario, which offered traditional Costa Rican cuisine.
Walking around Cartago was tiresome due to the heat but that fatigue vanished when we were captivated by the sighting of a SLOTH!

Your daily post truly makes us feel like we’re right there with you, absorbing the historical charm of Cartago! We’re so proud to see you dive into the heart of Costa Rican history, visiting the symbolic sites that shaped this nation’s identity. It must have been surreal to stand before the original bell announcing Costa Rica’s independence, and experience the country’s rich past and culture at the Museo Municipal de Cartago. The UNESCO World Heritage monument sounds like a true time capsule. The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, with its spiritual aura and the tradition of healing, must have left you with a sense of serenity. And the lunch, we bet the authentic Costa Rican cuisine was a delight! As for the heat and the fatigue, remember, these are all part of the adventure. And look at the reward – an encounter with a sloth! We’re with you in spirit every step of the way, and we couldn’t be more proud. Can’t wait to read more about your journey tomorrow. Stay hydrated, stay curious, and sleep well!

Why the resolution of the pictures are very blurry? We can not make the faces of people. Kindly advise if the pictures posted can be more clear, especially pictures’ faces. Thank you in advance.

Wow, that is a really good picture of the sloth. I’m not sure where you saw it exactly but if you saw it in Cartago itself that is really lucky. Looks like a really fun day, we’re following your journey closely!

The sloth was sighted just before we reached Turrialba on our way back from Cartago. The sloth was captured by Yasin, a Glimpser who had a powerful camera.
