¡Hola! It’s Anne and Jazmine, the leaders for Day 10: CAP Day 3!
Today was a very eventful and fulfilling day. To start, we woke up bright and early at 6:30 AM. Everyone had about an hour to get ready, before a delicious breakfast that consisted of pancakes, scrambled eggs, varying fruit, granola, and yogurt. Afterwards, we did our Mental Warm-Up on our Quote of the Day and our Questions of the Day. For the Quote we had, “In a time of destruction, create something.” by Maxine Hong Kingston, a US novelist and professor. Our overall consensus was that despite the trials and tribulations that occurred during this trip, we managed to come together and make the school we painted more aesthetically pleasing for the students. For the Questions we had, “What difference did you make? What will you take away from your CAP experience to apply to your lives back home?” We discussed that we set a positive example for the kids and that even though we did something small, we made a big difference in the world by making the kids and the staff of the school much happier.
After a tiring hike up the hill to the school, we stretched and played a fun activity called “Family Photo.” We posed for themes such as superheroes, dysfunctional road-trips, and babies. Straight after, we divided into two groups to paint different classrooms and got to work. In one room, we sandpapered the walls before painting them a beautiful blue and cream color. In the other room, we painted a classroom a light salmon color and despite the frustration that came with layering the light paint, we got the work done. All throughout, we were talking and playing music to boost morale. After a while, we headed to the school cafeteria where we ate salad, rice, and potatoes with chicken. Satisfied, we went straight back to work early. For the last hour, we continued to paint and make final touches before the end of the CAP project.
Throughout the past three days, we painted about 6 rooms, a bathroom, the outer sides of classrooms, and the walls facing the soccer field. As a sweet treat, our Community Family Members, Jessica and her son Owen, brought us some delicious Arroz con Leche to enjoy, hand-crafted souvenirs, as well as an outstanding performance by Owen. Amidst the celebration, we waited out the heavy thunderstorm.
As the rain died down, many of us went to a local mercado to get snacks while others walked straight home. While the other group went back home, it started to pour more, but we still had a great time. When we arrived, we took showers, played games like Mafia, and chilled and talked. Then, we had dinner in the dark consisting of spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread. Afterwards, we had our Nightly Meeting where we reviewed our Quote and Question of the Day, our Roses and Thorns, our Pluses and Wishes, and eventually passed the torch to Mariana and Elysiana who showed us their talents of hand farting and a round-off, topping our previous talents of a one-handed cartwheel and a 15-second no-look hand drawn portrait.
All in all, we had a great last CAP Day full of bonding, laughs, and hard work. We learned the value of resilience, patience, and cooperation and helped make the school much more beautiful.
