Day 2: ¡Hola amigos y familia!

Today was an enthusiastic day! It began with a hearty breakfast consisting of eggs, fruit, and morning conversations. The leaders introduced the group to the plan for the day before we set off. We traveled to a Batey (a rural community consisting of Haitians and Dominicans) and split off into groups designated to different families. Within their households, we did chores and experienced a day in the life. Immersed in a life clearly different from ours, we connected with the community and made many new friends – mostly the youngsters. We ate lunch with them, and afterwards, we spent meaningful time with them through games of futbol, face painting, and dancing bachata.

We then interviewed an impactful member of the community and leader of Servicio Social De Iglesias Dominicanas, Don Roberto, to further discover what the community experiences and where support is needed. Beyond the fun and games, we worked to formulate a CAP (Community Action Project) that will help to alleviate the short- and long-term issues plaguing the Batey. On our way back to our lodgings our unfortunate series of events continued when a bus tire popped, but, accustomed to the misfortune by now, we made the best of it by playing cards and swatting at the flies. Upon finally arriving at our destination, we cooled off with some enjoyable time in the pool. Lastly, we had dinner and debriefed together as the mosquitos feasted on our blood.

Hi Everyone, and thanks for this update! The batey — Kai, wow, I’m eager to hear about this when you get back. It sounds unforgettable. Glad you have such a great group to have these experiences with and talk about together, too!

Interesting to read about the unfortunate flat tire on the bus. The adversity that the students have experienced so far will be an asset in their development; the ability to remain cool, calm, and collected under pressure. Good luck and godspeed to all going forward.
