Day 2 in Costa Rica from the GGLs!

Day two of our Costa Rican experience has been nothing short of amazing! The day was packed full of activities, learning, fun, and delicious food.

A few students joined me (Tim) bright and early for a run through the hills near our lodge before breakfast. The rest of the crew was up and around, ready to eat by 7:30 am (everyone was on time!). We began our day by preparing the students to learn about the history and culture of Costa Rica with a powerful quote, “A people without knowledge of their past are like a tree without roots.” Before leaving for the day, we were able to meet the Global Glimpse C.O.O. who would be joining us on our journey to film the experience. We then embarked on a trip through the beautiful country to Cartago, the original capital of Costa Rica. We toured the Basilica de Los Angeles and the ruins in the city that are over 400 years old! We then made our way through a bustling market, full of vendors selling fruits, vegetables, meat, and goods of all kinds. One of the students remarked that this was one of the most beautiful scenes they have ever witnessed. Next, we toured a museum that was home to a large mural that told the history of Costa Rica’s colonization and independence. This mural was BEAUTIFUL! We could have spent the whole afternoon looking through its many details and experiencing the story of the people of Costa Rica.

After eating a delicious lunch, we began the trip back home, when we saw a three-toed sloth lounging on the top of a tree eating some leaves! She put on a show for us, stretching and waving her arms. It was an amazing sight. Once we made it home, many students took time to prepare scripts and give interviews for a short documentary that is being constructed about the Global Glimpse experience (be on the lookout for this in the future!). After filming, our program director gave the kids a salsa lesson, teaching them to step, twist, and turn to some of his favorite music. Check out the video here! We ended our night with a traditional dinner of rice, beans, and carne asada, and we handed over the daily leadership responsibilities to our first student volunteers, Carlos and Maya A.
