Day 2: San Pedro de Macorís: Exploring History and Culture

Hey World

July 18, 2024
Today was a fantastic day for our Glimpsers as we immersed ourselves in the rich history and vibrant culture of San Pedro de Macorís, a charming town in the Dominican Republic. Our day began bright and early at 7 AM with a hearty breakfast to fuel us for the adventures ahead.

After breakfast, we gathered for our morning meeting, with a whole body `stretch session, and then we discussed the day’s agenda and set our intentions. Excitement buzzed in the air as we boarded the bus, ready to explore the town. San Pedro de Macorís welcomed us with its warm sunshine and inviting streets.

Our tour guide shared fascinating insights about the history of San Pedro de Macorís and the Dominican Republic. We learned about the town’s colonial past, and its struggle for independence. A highlight of the morning was a stop at a local ice cream shop, where we savored some delicious, creamy treats, a perfect way to cool down and enjoy a taste of the local flavors.

After a refreshing break in the afternoon, we jumped into the lively world of Dominican music and dance. We had a fantastic session learning about the origins and significance of bachata and merengue. The highlight of our cultural immersion was a dance class led by Ms. Angelica, where we learned the steps and rhythms of these traditional dances. Laughter and music filled the air as we practiced our moves, enjoying every moment of this energetic and joyful experience. The glimpsers will return home with some new moves ready for prom next school year.

As the day drew to a close, we took some time for self-reflection, thinking about the new experiences and knowledge we had gained. Dinner was another delicious meal.

We ended with our nightly meeting, where we reflected on our journey so far and looked forward to the days ahead. Our group is growing closer with each passing day, and we’re having so much fun getting to know each other while exploring this beautiful country.

Today’s activities not only deepened our understanding of the Dominican Republic’s history and culture but also brought us closer together as a group. We can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds!

Stay tuned for more updates from our adventure in the Dominican Republic!

Thanks for the recap of your day Nathaly and Adriana. San Pedro de Macoris is a very authentic Dominican city with a lot of culture and history and I’m so happy you all got to soak it up. It seems like a great introduction to the country and your trip and I’m excited for you all to dive deeper over the next couple of weeks. I love the picture of the group dancing as well, also very Dominican!
