Day 4 – Global and Local business

Hola / Hello!

Our names are Evander and Miles, we are the first global glimpsers to be Lider del día ( Leader of the day ) . Our roles meant that we were responsible for waking up our fellow glimpsers, making sure that everyone was present and essentially overseeing the group and checking up on everyone. We began the day with an excellent breakfast handmade and prepared by our lovely Chefs. Then we departed for a hike on a coffee plantation named Aquiares, (fun fact, the town actually earned its name from this plantation). Today we learned about the history of Costa Rica´s economy with coffee. We were all told how coffee is an integral point in Costa Rica´s economy and how it was the source of how the town boomed and developed. This really made us realize that luxuries that we enjoy daily in the States is what keeps these communities thriving and developing. At the peak of our hike we stopped at the top of a hill with an incredible tree with a breathtaking view. After a break of admiring the view we headed back towards the base house, but not before stopping at the market to grab some snacks!

After our snack break, we came back and enjoyed our lunch prepared again by the wonderful chefs. After everyone ate, we shared some facts about local businesses and introduced our guest speaker named Karla, who introduced us to her Dairy farm named Finca la Florita. During this tour we got to interact with the cows by feeding them by hand with grass, milking them, and making cheese. We learned about the fundamentals of making Dairy in Costa Rica and Karla´s history on her family who owned the Farm. We even got to try out the cheese that was also made by Karla using the same milk that we got from the cow. Watching the process in person really does make you think about how something that we enjoy daily is actually an art form that takes a lot of knowledge and experimentation to make a criminally good cheese fit for a in-and-out burger or grilled cheese. LOL What also surprised us is that cheese doesn’t have to be stored for a long time like wine to be good. After saying our goodbyes, we had to greet the thunder and rain that is very common in Costa Rica while also going through a small elevated trail that was luckily made of stone.

Once we got home, we enjoyed our free-time before dinner and took a small break to prepare for the nightly meeting that took place after dinner. Once we finished our re-cap for the day and took time to take constructive criticism and also gave compliments, in which we felt that our peers had done really well today in being cohesive and took our role seriously. So to share our experience as being group leaders of the day, it was a surprisingly easy role that requires just keeping track of time and going the extra mile for our glimpsers and making sure they are on the same page. This is when we passed on the torch to Diego, Zoe, Jaismeen, and Kevin after they showcased their talents to everyone. Their dance and dunk contest was the perfect way to wrap up the night as a big group. So look forward to them as LDDs for community day tomorrow!

We also would like to mention a few appreciations to others for making our day as LLDs more enjoyable. First off, Jennifer for assisting in our role and helping in notifying others near her on the schedule. To my parents (Mile´s parents) and Rip!!! I miss you guys so much please leave me a comment!!!

Thank you Evander and Miles for writing a great post. I hope you all had another amazing day. Milking cows and then making cheese with the milk seems like such a cool experience. Zoe, I’m excited for you to be the leader of the day tomorrow, you will do amazing.
