Day 6- Aid and Development (No. 3)

Hola!! Serena and Ava here. Today we got to visit the town of Turrialba to explore the farmers market, or as they call it here, Las Ventas.  Before we got to Las Ventas, we had to fuel up with a fan-favorite breakfast of French toast along with fruit and eggs. The bread here is thicker and sweeter making for a great start to the day. We left the accommodation at 8:50 so we could catch the bus that headed into town. It was stressful trying to get a bus, as we almost were not able to go :(, but we made it!!)

Once we were there, we walked through the market and were able to see local produce and handmade jewelry. The jewelry stands definitely got a lot of business from us…lots of money went there, sorry Mom! We also got to enjoy drinking from fresh coconuts and eating the coconut meat.  The vendor would drill a hole into the coconut and then stick a straw in it for us. After drinking the juice, a few of us tried breaking the fruit open on the sidewalk. Spoiler: it didn’t work out.

After the market, we headed to the park so we could eat lunch and take photos in front of the Turrialba sign. Muchas gracias to Vera y Diego in the kitchen for making us burritos last minute to take with us. They were muy bien! Then we went to a knick-knack store and a thrift store to get some unique finds. We then got ice cream. It was definitely a challenge for all 21 of us. But it was some very good ice cream besides the fruit surprise in the cone. Afterward, we went to a local bakery and then headed back to the bus stop.

We made it back just in time for our guest speaker, who taught us all about sustainable development which is the process of moving forward technologically while being as environmentally friendly as possible. The main focus of his research is in aquaponics. He also explained the 17 rules countries try and follow in regard to sustainable development. We played a fun charades game relating to the rules. Muchas gracias Rodrigo!
