Day 6: Environmental Justice and Sustainability

¡Hola amigos y familias!

It’s Kelly and Ana here! Today we woke up to the chilly cloudy morning at seven AM. We then start off the morning with delicious French toast, fruit, yogurt, and scrambled eggs (and of course coffee and juice). Although we were very tired, we did some morning stretches for the mental warm-up to keep our bodies active and awake. As the washing machine was finally working and (almost) everyone did their laundry; throughout the day we laughed, talked, and bonded around by the hammock, and we learned many things about one another. Diana and Memo did a brief introduction on the CAP (Community Action Project) Seminar on what we will be doing for the upcoming days for CAP. As always, the lunch was super tasty as we had fajita (chicken), salad, and potatoes. We then watched a video on the importance of sustainability and Environmental Justice in Costa Rica. We met our special guest, Andres Zuniga (Fofo), who taught us the significance of Costa Rica’s environment, and agriculture, and the impact tourism and infrastructure have on biodiversity. To end things off, we were split into three groups: Government, Hotel Management, and Locals (Costa Ricans). We had a heated debate but in the end, the Hotel Management won but with guidelines. Lastly, we had a warm bowl of chickpea soup, rice, and salad. As always, we passed the torch to the next leaders of the day!

P.S: We read all the blog comments every night! Keep commenting! XOXO

On the topic of biodiversity I imagine you’re all seeing plants and wildlife we don’t get to see in NYC. Amalia we’re in Silverton and hiked the river trail you skiied. Beautiful. Can’t wait to hear what you end up doing as a project. Uncle B sends a hug. We love you and love reading your blogs daily.

Great job as leaders! Looks like you had a great day. I love that you all are experiencing life without phones. Hanging laundry was my favorite thing to do to help my mom as a child! The food sounds delicious. Ana, maybe you can cook for us when you get home. We miss & love you!! Xoxo
