DAY 7- Biocultural Diversity

Hello everyone,

My name is Jhonathan Davila Escorza and I was LDD (Leader of the Day) for the day. I had a good experience leading my fellow peers and friends as everyone was very cooperative with me throughout the day. It was easy to gather their attention to give announcements and generally socialize more. The hardest part personally was speaking up. I tend to be quiet so sometimes I would speak too low and people would not be aware of the announcement I had made. Thankfully my message would branch off from those who had heard me which was of great help. In regards to what we did, we visited Tortugas Pedasi as our theme today was Bicultural Diversity. Robert welcomed us and educated our delegation on the importance that sea turtles (which are all endangered due to poaching, climate change, and more) have on the environment. We received valuable information and were able to visit a nearby mangrove and beach shortly after. Something that stood out from what I learned was how some cultures can see the environment and species differently. In some cultures, it is a delicacy to eat turtle eggs while in others it is an inhumane source of food. Such conflicting views can lead to confusion as to what is considered “okay”. Another thing worth noting is that many people lack the information on why and how endangered species need our help. If more of this information was spread at school or local events I feel that it would greatly raise awareness not only to the people but from the government as well.

I want to close by saying thank you for taking the time to read my blog and the blogs of others. I hope this is something everyone enjoys keeping up with. Shoutout to my family and friends I miss you all and hope everything is well. The leaders for tomorrow are Amy and Mikaela!
