DÍA 6 – Aid + Development

VHS: The following recording dates back to 7/12/2023, 7:01 PM.

Interviewer: Today, coming to you from Santa Rosa District, in Turrialba, in Cartago, in Costa Rica, we’ll be speaking with Brady “The Sequel Electric Boogaloo Infinity War Part 8 Season 3” Williams (BTSEBIWP8S3 or BeDub) and Terrence Cookson (TC). So, without further ado, what have you two been up to as leaders of the day today?

Brady: Aight so on this fine day on July 12, 2023, we woke everyone up with the soothing, calm symphony known as “Chaos” by Heaven Pierce Her (you should listen to it at full volume, it’s quite relaxing and has a consistent time signature). After that, we ate some Gallo Pinto, eggs, and fruits for bekfast.

Terrence: Yeah, the whole wake-up call was somethin’ alright. We also drank star and passion fruit juice, as well as coffee for breakfast.

Brady: After bekfast, we then had a seminar presented by Daniel and Mila about our CAP thing (that stands for Community Action Project or something I guess). During the seminar, we did some cool activities, such as the one where we competed in teams to make more cubes than the others. To add a fun little rule to it, we were told that we could use other teams’ supplies to make the cubes. Obviously, polite communication/discussion (bantering at each other), fair trade (“stealing”), and teamwork (sabotage; look up the Banana Republics on Wikipedia), ensued.

Terrence: Yeah (chuckles), that’s about right. To be honest, the activity revealed a lot about human nature, how the second something is on the line, all orders will devolve at the drop of a hat. That’s dramatic, I know, but it sums it up pretty well.

Brady: Yeeeee (double thumbs up). After that we had some lunch and a bit of free time before our next big thing of the day: the CEO of Earth coming to save us all!

Terrence: (Leans forward) CEO of Earth would be Rodrigo Mendez, a well-respected environmental consultant with an extensive resume and history in the field. He was also allowed to pet the dog (allegedly).

Obligatory Doggo Picture

Brady: Anyways, Rodrigo gave an entire presentation on how to produce a sustainable project. Sustainable meaning that it will have long-lasting positive effects for future generations and minimal negative effects on the environment (not looking at any specific generation at all). It was really informative and educational, and some could say, quite epic.

Terrence: Very epic. Honestly, I found that his presentation gave us a great look into the true meaning of foreign aid. Aid has often been associated with selflessness and humanitarianism. While these are both big factors, Rodrigo does not consider them true forms of help. For context, “aid” is often given in the form of finite resources that do little to address the source of the problem and truly improve the situation at hand. Real “help,” on the other hand, provides a long-term solution that is sustainable and realistic in scope.

Brady: After that whole thing, we had some time before dinner to have some free time. Some of us went in the pool which was quite cool (heh rhyme time). Then we had our nightly meeting where we appointed the new leaders of tomorrow: Bridget and Emily.

Terrence: Yeah, we passed the torch on to both of them, I’m sure they’ll do good. They took over from there and we could finally get on to recording this tape.

Brady: Yeah it was a pretty cool day. Being the boss of a bunch of folks my age was quite weird. Anyways, where’s my $19.99 plus tax? I demand compensa-

VHS: Tape ends at 7:41 PM.

Dear BeDub, I loved this epic blog post! I could hear your voice as I was reading it. I’m glad you are having an educational experience and having fun also with your new friends. I hope you cook some of this great-looking food for us when you get back – you can make us some bekfast. I think you all drink more coffee than me, and I heard it’s good coffee there – maybe you can bring some home! Welp, I’m off to Blockbuster to rent a movie. Love, Dad

Wow I am so impressed! Glad the program focused on the problems with “aid” as it is traditionally given. Brady (Brady H — don’t have a clever handle for you, and don’t think you’d appreciate it if I told all these folks your childhood nicknames, so will stick with Brady), your Uncle B will be interested to hear what you learned about all this, as will I. Hope you were taking notes! ?
