If I were to say to you that going away without a phone to a foreign country for two weeks would help create the greatest friendships you could ever imagine, would you believe me? Well, that’s what happened on my trip, but not only did I make real friends, I feel as if I have joined a new community. Jordy and Noah were two strangers to me when we first met at the airport. I remember seeing Noah and thinking he looked like one of the most intimidating people I had ever seen in my life because he is a 6’2 giant. But then he spoke to me and I realized he was possibly the friendliest and the most gentle person I might have ever met. My other best friend from the trip, Jordy is someone who you always want by you because of how sweet, kind and respectful he is. I remember the first time I came into contact with Jordy on the airplane. We sat next to each other and didn’t peep a word to one another because we were just strangers at the time. However, even though we didn’t share one syllable with one another, Jordy still offered me a piece of his gum before takeoff because that is the sweet kind of person he is. On our trip, the three of us would sit all the way on the back of the bus and just have the greatest time laughing and joking with each other and I couldn’t imagine it without them.
These two, who were once strangers to me are now some of my closest friends and I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t go on the trip because then I wouldn’t have them in my life. We communicate almost every day and the day we got our phones back we made a group chat with just us three called “Rovers” and there is never a time where I open something and don’t roll on the floor from laughing so hard.
I truly feel like I have made friends for life and feel as if I have an extended family in the Bronx. We became so close that we even are planning on going back to the Dominican Republic together this coming summer. I feel as if I have become a part of their community because I have met all of their friends and they have met some of mine. I Met Nakhi, another glimpser, who went on a different trip than ours, but I have become very close to him and we chat almost every day. My Global Glimpse trip has given me an experience I will never forget because it gave me friends for life and I feel as if I have been into the Bronx community.
