History and Culture of Jarabacoa

We had a very fun day today! We learned about the history and culture of Jarabacoa. We went to visit the fire department and where we learned that the most common fires here in Jarabacoa are forest fires and received a demonstration from Coronel Martin and Fireman Melendez of how the uniform is needed during an emergency. They taught us how the alarms worked and what they do in case of an emergency. You can definitely tell who is new on the job, one way to determine is by looking at how they slide down on the pole. The experienced fireman went down the pole really really fast and nearly jumped off, leaving everyone shocked! The next firemen didn’t go down as fast as the first, but we still had a good laugh. They receive firetruck donations from Japan, New York, and Chicago! They let Julia use try a tool they use to cut cars open when people are in need of help. We took a walk through the city, saw the cemetery and the city hall, and learned that religion is an important part of their culture. We walked through the colorful town and had super delicious local-made ice cream, and John finally fulfilled his promise to Rosie about her mango ice cream ?

Then we drove over the mountains, where the view was remarkable. We then headed to Bohios Campo Anil and learned about the history of the tools used in the making of coffee, chocolate, and irons, as well as how they are made. We were able to try Casabe and hot chocolate and local-grown coffee. After lunch, we bonded more thanks to tips (a ball game). We drove back and, wow! WHAT A VIEW! Arriving back at the hotel for our dance class, we learned steps to Merengue, Bachata, and Salsa, where we had to partner up. Marysabela as the leader of the day danced with our visitors Aderly (Dance instructor), KJ, and Jamyriah as partners and had a fun time learning those dances. After that, we had free time when some people were in the pool, and others played cards and made bracelets. Abigail as the leader of the day made sure to keep everyone hydrated and covered with sunscreen and bug spray, which she carried in her “Dora Purse.” After we had dinner and our daily nightly meeting, we passed the torch.
