Inmigración

Today we woke up bright and early at 6:00 am to a beautiful song reminding us that it was the first of the month. It was raining pretty bad but we still pushed through and ate some pancakes and eggs. After breakfast, we hit the road for a 4-hour drive to our beautiful beach house. Once we made it to the house we quickly grabbed a bite to eat and had a quick meeting regarding the rest of our day. Next, we went to meet with an amazing organization called “Ascala” who help many Haitian immigrants find a place within the DR and help them navigate the racial challenges that they face. We heard touching stories that really resonated with us and after we engaged in a group breathing exercise to just relax after such a heavy conversation. After meeting with one of Ascala’s founders and a Haitian immigrant we went into the sugar cane fields, where everyone left with muddy shoes. After learning about the intense labor and extreme mistreatment the workers experience, we walked through the field and found a patch of sugarcane that we could actually eat. Many of us enjoyed the sugarcane and ate quite a lot. Though today was pretty loaded and heavy we ended the night off with an amazing self-reflection session. We talked about how blind we as Americans can be when it comes to other countries and their issues. Now as we unwind and get ready for our fun day we are playing games to give a little positivity to such a heavy and emotional day. Your líderes del día , Daniel y Mario.
