La historia y la cultura

¡Hola a todos!

It’s Claire and Josue here, the resident GGLs in Las Tablas. Today we spent our first full day in the city of Las Tablas learning about the rich culture and community. We started the day preparing our Glimpsers for their 2-week stay in Las Tablas by creating community norms and mentally preparing them to discover, design, and deliver their Community Action Project (CAP Project) with our partner Nutre Hogar. Nutre Hogar is an organization founded in 1988 with the purpose of rehabilitating and preventing childhood malnutrition in underserved communities of Panama.

We took a walking tour of the city, where we learned about Dr. Belisario Porras, a three-term president (1912-1924) of Panama who is also the namesake of parks, plazas, schools, and more in Las Tablas.

We returned to our accommodations to enjoy a delicious lunch provided by the restaurant attached to the hotel we are staying at. Some students even had a bonus sweet treat from a local bakery to help push them through some afternoon slump and energize them for our first free-time outing while the next Líderes del Día (LDD) of the day prepared for their role.

The highlight of many of our days was visiting the Academia Folclórico Santa Librada, a dance studio that specializes in traditional Panamanian dances. There, we had to opportunity to watch young people, some as young as 4 years old, perform many traditional Panamanian dances. Then they partnered up with each of us (both Glimpsers and GGLs) to teach us a few of the dances; these kids made the dances look effortless. We were so proud of everyone for taking a risk and jumping in with enthusiasm and an open mind. The dancers from Academia Folclórico were very welcoming; these dancers play such an integral part in the preservation of Panamanian tradition and culture.

Last, but certainly not least, we had a very important student birthday! Monse turned 17 today (6/20), which we celebrated by singing, dancing, eating cake, and balloons. ¡Feliz cumpleaños!

Big Love!
