Panama City History!

Hi GG Families!!

Even though yesterday morning we felt the effects of lack of sleep, we still got up bright and early to see the Museums in Panama City. We learned about the Guna People in the Museum of Mola! They believed in Mythology and also created different patterns to make protective clothing. They were one of the first Native Tribes in Panama and probably the oldest! 97% of them live in Panama after they migrated from Costa Rica 3,500 years ago. Here, students created paper animals and enjoyed the interactive experience with different woven color patterns from the Guna People.

Rainy and hot the weather was. With the humidity through the roof, we made our way to the Panama Canal Museum. We went on a guided tour and learned about the history behind the Canal. We learned about the different countries that took power in Panama to control the people and the building of the canal. They hired workers from all over the Caribbean and other countries.

We saw segregation, racism, and classism shine their way through the history of Panama due to American Influence in the creation of the canal. White American men being paid double to do the same work and living in better living spaces. People of color or those marked as “Silver” Members of the canal, created unions to fight for better wages.

On our ride to Las Tablas, a pit stop along the way helped the students take a trip back to childhood! They played for a few minutes at a Playground at a gas station.

Sounds like it was so fun and educational! Especially with such an interactive activity. And the gas station pit stop was totally worth it, i’m sure a playground at such an esteemed venue will be a magical experience. As they always say in Macau, “Spare the gas station some change, keep the jinn away”
