Putting the Action in CAP

Hola familias!

Today, we started our Community Action Project at the school El Yas Escuela Otto Mora Perez. Students had a bright and early wake-up call of 6:00 am to start off this project and begin working! This project shares a goal of creating a garden full of vegetation that the students of El Yas Escuela Otto Mora Perez can enjoy for the duration of their school year. Not only does the construction of the project create more resources for the local kids of the Orosi Valley, but it also provides opportunities for the student to learn responsibility.

This CAP project also intends to put more “life” into the school as Glimpsers are creating a new walkway at the front of the building. We often tend to view things that are more colorful as more beautiful. For the first four hours of the morning, students split off into groups and began clearing out a significantly sized area of land to be used for the garden.

After multiple breaks and lunch, students continued to pull weeds, dirt, and rocks to create the foundation of the garden; students also worked with cement to lay down fresh tiles for the front of the school. During some of our breaks, we got to meet and chat with some of the students. They were so excited to see the progress we made during the day. We loved getting to know the people who will enjoy the fruits of our labor. Work time was cut short when we experienced one of Costa Rica’s rainstorms!

We feel that students opened their minds about new educational experiences and practices, as well as how to work as a team to accomplish their shared goals. We are excited to pass the torch to the next leaders of the day, Matt and Melanie, who will continue leading our group through the CAP project.

Pura Vida!

Its mom again! How beautiful that you are building a garden! Papa would be so proud to see this! We know how much he loved gardening. Counting down the days until I can hear your sweet voice again. Make sure you are reapplying your sunscreen! I love you so much!

A rainstorm no less…I am sure that was pretty cool to experience in Costa Rica!

Hi Matt,
We love reading the blog every night, it looks like you are all doing great work. BTW – your brother held a yard sale and we caught him before all your stuff was sold. He has moved in to your room, though. Love you!

‘Hannah and Julia, I just spoke with you on the phone and it was so good to hear your voices! This project sounds amazing and I could see from the pictures that it was hard work! I’m sure the kids at the school will appreciate the garden and the walkway for their school. What a beautiful gift to them. I guess you experienced the Costa Rican rain, but that will water the garden! I hope you are all having a wonderful and rewarding time! Love to you!!! Mom and Meabhan

So proud of you, Raihana <3 I know hot and humid are not your best friends, but I'm really glad those kids will enjoy the fruits of your labor.
