“If you want to change the world, be the change.” -Mahatma Gandhi
Hi I’m Kyra, a rising senior at Mountain View High School, and I was today’s leader of the day. The theme of today was flexibility and spontaneity since we had a change to the original schedule.
Today we woke up at 7:00, had breakfast at 8:00, then explored Jarabacoa on our safari bus. After taking pictures in front of the city sign (colorfully painted), and enjoying the nature of La Confluencia (where two rivers merge) and the adjacent playground, we returned to our accommodation to have lunch. At 1:30, we left for Los Bohios where we went swimming and played pool. We came back for dinner, had free time, then a nightly meeting, and here I am writing this blog. ?
On my leadership day, I discovered that people appreciate my leadership style and my own unique personality and voice. I felt a bit disoriented because of the undisclosed schedule that was to be determined, but also happy that we were able to have a good time and enjoy each other’s company. I was surprised that I was able to project my voice in order to get people’s attention for headcounts and announcements, etc., and I am most proud of the group’s ability to support one another and make each other feel important.
Being a leader does not come naturally to me so I was pretty nervous for this day, but it ended up going pretty well. The most inspiring moment for me was when I told everyone the day’s call and response which was: “el barco se hunde” & “si mi capitan” and everyone cheered. It was from our game taught to us by John. Our group (as always?) embodied camaraderie by being there for each other despite the uncertainty of the schedule and by keeping each other’s spirits up during difficult times. We established mutual trust and connection with each other and have made friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime.
Big love to my family back home, I can’t wait to see you guys soon!
Now I’m passing the torch to Lani and Sarai for Final Reflection Day. Thanks for reading!

I love that each glimpser has a chance to be the leader of the day. IT’s wonderful to see the different voices of the leader and how the team all supports each other. We read about the cause of the unexpected change in your schedule and we are grateful to all of you being adaptive and supportive of each other through these unexpected change. Life throws all sorts of surprises at us. It’s wonderful to see how supportive the group is of each other! Looks like there was a lot of time together to bond and get to know each other. I’m glad to hear that everything worked out and the Glimpsers had a fun day, despite the schedule change. Kyra, we are proud of your efforts to be the leader of the day. Sometimes it’s good to be out of your comfort zone because you will have a chance to learn and grow and expand your horizons. Enjoy the rest of the trip! We’ll see you all soon back in SF!
