Hi, from Savannah and Sergio!
When asked to volunteer to be the first Lideres del día, we were the first two to raise our hands.
We started the day off by waking up at 5:00 am to get ready before everyone else to prepare for the day. We made sure everything was situated for breakfast and our morning meeting.
After the meeting, we got on the bus to head to the coffee plantation in Aquiares where we met our tour guide Memo. He provided us so much insight into the history behind coffee and how it shapes the economy. Memo then gave us a tour of the coffee processing plant and explained that the coffee plantation had become carbon-neutral in 2022. Even though Brazil produces more coffee than Costa Rica, in order to be more sustainable, they will always prioritize quality over quantity.
We had lunch at a local restaurant where everyone enjoyed delicious traditional Costa Rican dishes! After we finished eating, we went to the cheese farm where we met Karla. She is the owner of a farm that has been passed down through generations. Karla also showed us all of the plants that the cows eat and even let Sergio and Margo milk one of the cows. She also showed us how to make cheese, which we were able to taste before taking home. It was a fascinating experience to see how artisanal Turrialba cheese is made, and it was even more fun and engaging when Karla tested our understanding of what we had learned.
Overall, we did so much today but we enjoyed every minute of it!
Hasta Luego!

Savannah and Sergio, Congratulations on being the first “Lideres” of the day! I enjoyed reading your blog. I love the picuture under that HUGE tree. How beautiful! It looks like you guys had a full day. Hannah, I can only guess that you have your hand in a bowl of cheese (?) I can only imagine what that felt like! I’m glad you and Julia and the group are learning so many new things. We miss you like crazy, but just think of everything you’ll be able to share with us when we see each other again. Have a wonderful time! Love to you and the whole group!! Mom and Meabhan.
