The Streets of Constanza

Buenas family and friends!

Today, we began our adventure in earnest. After a delicious breakfast of fresh mango and oatmeal, we learned about the rich history of the Dominican Republic’s struggle for true independence. (Many thanks to the expertise of Luis, our knowledgeable and engaging guide.) Next, we took to the streets of Constanza to learn a little more about our temporary home. We visited the busts of the founding fathers of DR: Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, Juan Pablo Duarte, and Ramon Matias Mella. Additionally, we stopped the local fire station and were charmed by the hospitality and ingenuity of the firemen. We learned that they retrofitted their own trucks! We also learned they were down for a photo-op or two. Our final stop on the tour was the town’s beautiful Anacaona park, where we got to see a marching band and graduation in progress. After returning to our accommodation, Glimpsers were able to enjoy free time, self-reflection, and community building. We also endlessly debated the correct bodega order and got into some spirited games of Uno.

Our quote of the day today was: “History never says ‘farewell.’ It always says see you later,” by Eduardo Galeano. After a delicious dinner of carbonara pasta and salad, Glimpsers reflected on the cyclical nature of history. Students commented on the importance of knowing the past in order to do better in the future, both in DR and in our home country. There is a palpable excitement to learn more about this beautiful country, it’s past, and it’s future in the days to come.

At the end of this very packed day, we faced our most important task: celebrating Melu’s birthday! We are so grateful and lucky to have her guiding this trip and we wish her the very best. Up next, Michaela and Aeven will take the reigns as leaders of the day tomorrow.

On to day three!
