Hello friends and family! My name is Brett Beardsley and I am happy to say our second fun day was a blast!
Our day began at the early hour of 5:00 AM. After a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and beans and rice, we hopped on a two hour bus ride to Somoto Canyon. Once we picked up the local fire fighters and tour guides (to help us stay safe), we had our sights set on an adventure. We had nothing but our water bottles and life jackets for this trip.
After a thirty minute hike into the canyon, we were able to gaze into the vast mountain ranges of Nicaragua. Words can’t describe how beautiful the mountains were. They seemed to extend as far as the eye can see. In fact, we were able to see the mountains in Honduras, a neighboring country to Nicaragua.
However, we would be doing more than just a hike. As we ventured into the canyon, the trail ended. In order to make it through the canyon, we had to swim. And swim we did. I have never seen a group of teenagers brave enough to go where we did. In total, we swam for over an hour in the canyon. It wasn’t the most comfortable time, but we were still having the time of our lives.
The highlight of our day was jumping off of rocks that were up to 15 feet high!!! The adrenaline rush was insane! Every jump left a gigantic splash and we were always cheering each other on. We all wanted to jump at least one more time before we left. After a short boat ride, we got back to the bus and headed back to the hostel.
I am very happy to say that our final fun day was a success. Swimming in the middle of Somoto Canyon was truly a sight to behold and a time we will never forget. Now that our fun day is over, we are thrilled to begin work on a park! (For our Community Action Project) These next 6 days will be tough, but after seeing the heart and commitment this group has I am confident we will be able to leave our mark on Esteli!
Thank you all for reading and don’t be afraid to leave blog comments! We read them in the morning and we love hearing from the states 🙂
